Visionary and inspiring, especially in the context of the complete Autopoiesis of Architecture volumes, and still fresh after many readings. Always finding something *new* and surprising in there. Love this note you added: “Architecture here stands in for the totality of the design disciplines, i.e. all theses put forward here pertain also to all other design disciplines, i.e. metaverse design, urban design, architecture, interior design, furniture design, product design, fashion design, graphic design, web-design.”
Thanks and can see clearly your discourse and agree totally with most of today’s ‘artistic’ expression being in a world solely of its own parameters. Past art’s societal function has now largely been lost; is most certainly a truth.
A little uncertain about Part 9, the necessity of demarcation in that it is the ‘artistic’ expression of architecture that is one of its most powerful “demarcations” of built expression above that of the wealth of poor design. Though I grasp that ZHA aesthetic expression arises from necessary and integrated movement they are still artistic in their expression and integral to the final design.
(contemporary) art (the art world) has differentiated away from architecture, bringing forth a sui generis social function system that did not exist before the 20th century. Up to the end of the 19th century architecture and art (sculpture, painting, arts & crafts) were indeed a unified discourse. Not anymore. The old art still exists but is now called design: graphic design, product design etc.
Another question though distantly related. Having just read ZHA 19.00 04.06.22 on Twitter about the origins of Deconstionism could you look at the limited examples of work by my late friend/ mentor Iwan Iwanoff on YouTube as after reading the article feel you may have, at last, given his work in concrete block a definition. That is Deconstructionist. His work is far too often referred to incorrectly as ‘Brutalism’. Thanks.
